What do you get from a Bowl of Plain Rice?

Published February 10, 2013 by gigiwellness28

About 20 years ago, on a late Spring evening, a young man was pacing up and down outside a little self serve café, he finally walked in the café timidly as the café was also empty.

He went to the counter and said, “Excuse me, I would like to order a bowl of rice please?”

The young couple, who started this café not long ago, was a bit disappointed when they realised he was not going to order other dishes,  but still filled up a bowl of rice for him.

When the young man paid for the bowl of rice, he asked, “Excuse me, can I use those sauces on the side counter?”

The female owner replied with a friendly smile, “Sure, go help yourself, they are free of charge!”

A bowl of rice with sauce

The young man sat down to eat his rice with sauces.  When he was half way, he went to order another bowl of rice.

The male owner said, “One bowl is definitely not enough, I’ll fill it up a bit more this time.”

“Oh no,” the young man replied, “it’s for my lunch, I’ll take it to college tomorrow.”

The male owner thought the young man must be struggling financially, so he could only afford a bowl of plain rice for his meal.  Out of sympathy, he decided to add a spoonful of their special mince meat plus a tea leaf egg at the bottom of the bowl, then filled up the bowl with rice – you would have been fooled by the take away bowl and thought it’s just rice.

His wife saw what he did and understood he wanted to help the young man, but she didn’t understand why he hid the meat and egg under the rice; until the husband explained, “If he saw we’ve added the other food to the rice, he might think we are pitying him, that would hurt his self-esteem.  He might feel ashamed and wouldn’t come back again.  If he went to another store and just ate rice, how would he have enough energy to study?”

“You are such a good man, honey, always considering others’ feelings.”

“Well, if I was not good, would you still marry me?”

The young couple felt so happy to be able to help.

When the young man finished his bowl of rice and came over to pick up the heavy weighted take away rice, he couldn’t help but look at the owners with question marks all over his face.

“Work hard in your study!  We’ll see you tomorrow!”  the owner waved good bye to the young man, hoping he will return to their café tomorrow.  The young man started to tear up, but he didn’t want the young couple to notice.

From that evening onwards, apart from long holiday, the young man would come to this little café to order 2 bowls of rice, 1 for dinner and 1 for lunch.  The owners had decided to hide different types of meat under his take away bowl of rice.  This had became a little unspoken secret between the 3 of them.

The couple had also decided to keep the same price for the young man’s bowl of rice.  The 3 of them would chat about his study and life, a special bond had formed, until the young man graduated a few years later.

About 20 years later, the couple, who were now in their late 40’s still ran the same little self serve café, received the Council Notification of demolition of illegal constructions in the area.  With inflation over the years and their limited saving, as they supported their son to study abroad, they wouldn’t be able to run their little café in the same area, to serve their regular customers; but had to start everything all over again, when they were almost 50.  Facing the possibilities of unemployment in their age and all the uncertainties ahead of them, they didn’t know what to do.

While they were trying to pick themselves up, a suited man came into the café.  He didn’t place an order, he just said to them, “Hello, I am the Assistant General Manager of xxx Co. Ltd., our CEO told me to invite you to run a self serve café in our newly built office building.  All the facilities and food will be provided by our company, you just need to bring your cooking skills.  Your café and our company will share the profit 50/50.”

“Who is your CEO?  Why does he treat us with such good favour?  We haven’t known any important people like that in our lives!”

“All I know is both of you had treated our CEO very well and he loves eating your café’s mince and tea leaf egg with a big bowl of rice. You’ll need to ask him for other details when he comes.”

The couple looked at each other with a puzzled look on their faces.  Later on, a man in a suit came in the café, he greeted the couple and thanked them.  He told them he was the young man, who only ordered 2 bowls of rice every evening, 1 for dinner and 1 for lunch.  He also said if it was not their continuous encouragements and the unspoken secret, he wouldn’t have been able to complete his study and definitely wouldn’t be able to achieve what he has achieved and became a big company’s CEO.  The couple was so pleased and amazed with what he had offered them.

They kept catching up until it was time to head home.  The CEO stood up, said his goodbye and right before he stepped out from the café, he turned around, gave the couple a deep bow and said, “Work hard in running the café, our company relies on your help.  We’ll see you tomorrow!”

Did God really not answer our prayers?

Published December 31, 2012 by gigiwellness28

There was a boy, who was brought up by his widow mother (a devoted Christian), he learnt to pray ever since he could remember, his first reading material was the artwork with scripture from Sunday School, which he enjoyed the activities and had always been the best behaved kid in the class.

The boy grown up and started working.  Few years later, he met some new friends and hung out with the wrong group of people.  He started to think he knew much more than his Mom, he concerned more on his “eventful” life style and soon his “eventful” schedules had no spare slot to attend church services, read Bible, pray nor stay at home; he became rebellion towards his Mom and even reluctant to have contact with her.

About a couple of decades later, his Mom passed away in her sleep.  While clearing out her belongings, he found an envelope addressed to him.  It was a letter from his Mom, telling him how much she loved him and how much God loves him; how she had put him in her daily prayers, even when it seemed he was so far away from her and God; how she longed to see him return back to God; and how she believed God will one day answered her prayers.

His tears kept flooding down his face, his Mom’s words had melted his last shield, he had never thought she would still pray for him even after the rude remarks he had made to her, to her belief and to God; he couldn’t believe the extent of her faith in God.  Right on the spot, he made a tremendous decision, he confessed his sins to God and repented.  Then he got rid of all his “so-call” friends and started to attend church services.  Not only did he return back to God, he also decided to involve himself in ministry work.

The above is his testimony.

Dear Friends,

Did God answered his Mom’s prayers?

Yes, God did.

God heard her and He knew when was the perfect time to answer her prayers.

God’s schedules are differ from our schedules; we cannot say God does not answer our prayers just because we haven’t seen the results yet.  Remember, we are short sighted; God is long sighted.

No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him.  ~ I Corinthians Chapter 2 verse 9 (New Living Translation)

Have a glorious day!!   :-)

Unconditional Love

Published September 4, 2012 by gigiwellness28

Before a child was born, the parents-to-be will get prepare for its arrival;
After the child was born, the parents will love the baby with all their hearts;
They will try to provide the best to the child through his/her life;
When the child behaves inappropriately, the parents will discipline the child and forgive the child;
It won’t stop there, the parents will continue to guide the child, because of their unconditional love towards the child.  But,

did the child know about the love before the birth?  NO
did the child know about the love when he/she was still an infant?  NO
did the child understand how deep his/her parents’ love to him/her?  MOST PROBABLY NOT
would the child’s parents think twice before loving their child?  NO
would the child’s parents love the child less, just because their inappropriate behaviours?  NO

God loves the world – whoever we are, whatever we had done – He still loves us.

Just like how parents loving their kids, even when the kids did not know the parents’ existing.  With no questions ask, parents love and provide their kids.

This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice of our sins. ~ I John Chapter 4 verse 10

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

Published August 11, 2012 by gigiwellness28

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein – a story book my late Grandpa loved dearly.

Different people have different interpretations about this story; to my Grandpa, this story reminded him of how God sacrificed His only son for us.

According to Wikipedia, Timothy P. Jackson, a former professor of Religious Studies at Stanford University put it:

Is this a sad tale?  Well, it is sad in the same way that life is depressing.  We are all needy, and, if we are lucky and any good, we grow old using others and getting used up.  Tears fall in our lives like leaves from a tree.  Our finitude is not something to be regretted or despised, however; it is what makes giving (and receiving) possible.  The more you blame the boy, the more you have to fault human existence.  The more you blame the tree, the more you have to fault the very idea of parenting.  Should the tree’s giving be contingent on the boy’s gratitude?  If it were, if fathers and mothers waited on reciprocity before caring for their young, then we would all be doomed.

I found the actual ’73 Giving Tree Movie spoken by Shel Silverstein in YouTube, so for those who don’t want to read the story but want to watch the Movie, please click below, otherwise, please read on or do both:

The Giving Tree

Once, there was a tree…
And she loved a little boy.
And every day the boy would come
And he would gather her leaves
And make them into crowns and play king of the forest.
He would climb up her trunk
And swing from her branches
And eat apples
And they would play hide-and-go-seek.
And when he was tired, he would sleep in her shade.
And the boy loved the tree… very much…
And the tree was happy.

But time went by,
And the boy grew older.
And the tree was often alone.
Then, one day, the boy came to the tree and the tree said,
“Come, Boy, come and climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and eat apples and play in my shade and be happy!”
“I am too big to climb and play,” said the boy. “I want to buy thing and have fun.  I want some money.  Can you give me some money?”
“I’m sorry,” said the tree, “but I have no money.  I have only leaves and apples.  Take my apples, Boy, and sell them in city.  Then you will have money and you’ll be happy.”
And so the boy climbed up the tree and gathered her apples and carried them away.
And the tree was happy…

But the boy stayed away for a long time… and the tree was sad.
And then one day the boy came back, and the tree shook with joy, and she said,
“Come, Boy come and climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and eat apples and play in my shade and be happy.”
“I am too busy to climb trees,” said the boy.  “I want a house to keep me warm”, he said.  “I and want a wife and I want children, and so I need a house. Can you give me a house?”
“I have no house”, said the tree.  “The forest is my house”, said the tree.  “But you may cut off my branches and build a house. Then you will be happy.”
And so the boy cut off her branches and carried them away to build his house.  And the tree was happy.
But the boy stayed away for a long time…
And when he came back, the tree was so happy she could hardly speak.
“Come, Boy” she whispered, “Come and play.”
“I am too old and sad to play,” said the boy.  “I want a boat that will take me away from here.  Can you give me a boat?”
“Cut down my trunk and make a boat,” said the tree.  “Then you can sail away… and be happy.”
And so the boy cut down her trunk
And made a boat and sailed away.
And the tree was happy…
But not really.

And after a long time the boy came back again.
“I am sorry, Boy,” said the tree, “but I have nothing left to give you – My apples are gone.”
“My teeth are too weak for apples,” said the boy.
“My branches are gone,” said the tree.  “You cannot swing on them.”
“I am too old to swing on branches,” said the boy.
“My trunk is gone,” said the tree.  “You cannot climb.”
“I am too tired to climb,” said the boy.
“I am sorry,” sighed the tree.  “I wish that I could give you something… but I have nothing left.  I am just an old stump.  I am sorry…”
“I don’t need very much now,” said the boy.  “Just a quiet place to sit and rest.  I am very tired.”
“Well,” said the tree, straightening herself up as much as she could, “well, an old stump is good for sitting and resting.  Come, Boy, sit down… sit down and rest.”
And the boy did.
And the tree was happy…

The end.

A Small Gesture – 2

Have you ever heard of something similar to “The Drive Thru Difference”?

The concept is simple… when buying a meal at a drive thru, ask the attendant if you can also pay for the person behind you.  When that person picks up their meal, they’ll find out it’s free, courtesy of a postcard note from someone friendly:

Hi,

You don’t know me but I’ve just paid for your order.  No gimmicks – it’s just something I felt like doing.  I heard about people doing things for others, they call it “the drive thru difference.”  Maybe you’ll feel like doing it for someone else!

I hope this encourages you today!

Signed,

The friend in front of you

One of our Pastors told us once that, from time to time, he would pay for another table when he’s in a Cafe, that’s the similar idea.

At time when people are doing it tough and stressed out with daily life, the “Drive Thru Difference” might just be the lift that makes someone’s day!

Let’s learn to bless others when we’re being blessed by God 🙂

A Small Gesture – 1

Published July 24, 2012 by gigiwellness28

On a walking trip up through a little town one spring, a hiker stopped by a small farm house for a drink of cool spring water.

A little girl answered his knock and instead of water bought him a glass of fresh milk.

When he asked her, “How much do I owe you?”  She replied, “You don’t owe me anything at all.  My mother taught us never to accept anything for doing someone a kindness.”

After a short friendly visit, he went on his way.

Some years later, a young lady went to a hospital as a patient and needed surgery.  One of the doctors was called in for the consultation, when he heard the name of the town she came from, he rose and went down the hall of the hospital.

He recognized her at once.  The doctor requested the business office to pass her final bill to him for approval.  When the bill came to his office, he looked at  it, then wrote something on it and sent it to her room.

When her bill was brought into the room, she found across its face was written in a bold hand, “Paid in full with one glass of milk!

An act of goodness that you do today, can come back to you or someone that you love when you are not expecting it.

If you do not see this act of goodness returned, at least you will have made a difference in this world.
